What if there was something so big – so transformational for music, greeting card verse, and rap music, that it would give masses of people a new appreciation and love of poetry?
What the word poetry means to most people is the old styles – traditional poems and structures taught in school – boring stuff that you struggle to understand and seldom appreciate. What is valued by the literary community as “good poetry” does not embrace the new styles that are all around us in our daily life – poems in song lyrics, rap music and greeting card verse. And this limited definition of poetry by academia is what has kept “poetry” in the dark ages as a dying art form.
I never liked most poetry…
My name is Ruth Kuttler, the author, poet and graphic artistic responsible for the Visions In Verse book and art poetry collection. Most people I meet are surprised when I tell them that I do not like most poetry. Except for a few poems I read or learned in school, I was never a fan of traditional poetry that bored me with endless metaphors that I couldn’t care less about. The language and messages were not meaningful in today’s contemporary times. But I always loved song lyrics that told a passionate, funny or meaningful story. And I could spend hours in a card shop reading heartfelt greeting card verse that inspired me and brought tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.
The poetry I wrote changed my life…
It came as a surprise to me when I was struggling with my career and stumbled upon a poetry contest, that I started to write poetry for the first time. But the poetry that flowed from my pen onto paper was not the traditional – it resonated in my heart and soul. As I shared it, I saw tears in the eyes of the people who heard it as they said, “How do I get that poem? I must have your poems.” This was poetry that inspired and empowered people of all ages and cultures.
When my book Visions in Verse was published, many people bought multiple copies for gift giving. They told me how this collection of poems and inspirational stories and messages had changed their lives. But many of these fans told me that they didn’t like poetry. They said I should think about calling my work something else. This bothered me because my work absolutely was poetry. But then I realized that I really didn’t like most “poetry.”
I also knew that my poetry was more like song lyrics, rap and greeting card verse that spoke to the hearts and souls of masses of people – people who really did love poetry.
Time for poetry to mean something new…
It is time for a new age of poetry – one that gives masses of people a new love and appreciation for “poetry” in all styles including song lyrics, rap and greeting card verse. If you agree and will help to share this message, please join me. When you do, you can help to bring poetry in all its wonderful and timely formats to a much larger community. This includes schools where children can be inspired and empowered to unleash their most creative gifts through writing all styles of poetry. Won’t you please help?
